A public monument to the Soviet Armed Forces in Sofia, Bulgaria was vandalized in striking fashion over the weekend. The statues of the WWII soldiers have been spray-painted to resemble familiar figures of capitalist iconography such as Superman, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus and Captain America, with the hastily added writing beneath it stating that the statue is now “in step with the times.”

Bulgarian Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov has denounced the act as vandalism, saying that “We are the only ones led by some kind of destructive force when it comes to monuments of socialism.”

However, could the colorful reworking actually be a sign that the Bulgarian public has something deeper to say?
